Before deep cleaning: 10 small things that make a big difference (and save you money)

You pay for the time we use. Here's what you can do the night before so we spend it on cleaning — not moving your things.

A deep clean takes time — typically 4-7 hours depending on the apartment. We charge by the hour instead of a fixed per-m² rate because it's more honest. But it also means every minute we spend moving your things is a minute we don't spend cleaning them. Here are 10 small steps that make a big difference.

The 10 things

  1. Clear the tables. Not all decoration — just day-to-day clutter, papers, mail, chargers. It gives us direct access to surfaces.
  2. Empty the sinks of dishes. We wipe the sinks, but we don't wash your dishes. Bowls from yesterday delay the kitchen portion.
  3. Put laundry in the basket. Piles on the floor or chairs cost us time before we can vacuum.
  4. Remove the rug if it needs separate cleaning. We vacuum it, but if it needs washing or professional cleaning, that's a separate job.
  5. Clear shelves of things you don't want moved. Books, crystal glasses, artwork — we don't touch them. If you want the shelf cleaned, things need to come off.
  6. Don't defrost the oven. Leave it for us — we use professional oven cleaner that's more effective than household products.
  7. Have a plan for dog or cat. Not because we're afraid of them — but professional cleaning means machines, dust, and sometimes unfamiliar products. Most animals are best out of the way.
  8. If there's something particularly fragile — tell us. Original Wegner chairs, an 1800s mirror, antique chandeliers. We're careful regardless, but ‘particularly careful’ requires that we know.
  9. Give us access info: alarm code, key procedure, which doors should be closed. Send it in a text the day before.
  10. Don't expect to be home. Most of our clients are out. Most efficient and least dramatic for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tidy up beforehand?
Yes, to a reasonable extent. You don't need to make the home clean — that's why we come. But clearing tables and floor of daily clutter makes a big time difference.
What about my children's toys?
Toys on the floor we vacuum around, but if they're collected in baskets we can clean the floor underneath. Clear what you want clean underneath.
Can I get a cheaper price if I prepare?
Indirectly yes — preparation reduces time, and you pay for time. So the tidier, the shorter the time, the lower the price. But we don't formally discount.
What if I forget some of the 10?
We adapt. This isn't a test — just practical tips. Don't stress over the list; we help as best we can.
